Antigua Cruises

A port of call on many Caribbean cruises, Antigua is a delightful island in the West Indies. With its shimmering white, palm-fringed sands and tranquil turquoise waters, it's a little slice of paradise on earth. One of the premier tourist destinations in the Caribbean, there are many tourist hot spots here, including ‘Nelson's Dockyard' which is situated in the English Harbour and pays tribute to Antigua's past as a Royal Navy base. If you journey a little further up the hill then you'll discover ‘Shirley Heights' which are the ruins of the former lookout fort of the Royal Navy and offer the most stunning views. Antigua has 365 superb beaches ('one for each day of the year' say the Antiguans). There's a beach to suit everyone. The beach closest to St John's is at Fort Bay, near Fort James.

Antigua is home to numerous shops and boutiques, which sell everything from straw products, rum to jewellery. The best place to buy local handicrafts is the ‘Mercado Artesanias' (handicraft market). You'll find textiles, masks, local pottery and wooden crafts here.

The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (E.C.). Antigua is 5 hours behind Greenwich meantime (GMT -5).
