Things to do in Venice

There’s a wealth of things to see and do in Venice and if you don’t mind walking, you’ll be able to take it all in on foot. It’s the world’s only pedestrian city and as such there are no cars permitted in the centre. For a more relaxing way to see the sights, there are numerous water buses and taxis available to transport you along the many canals and waterways which weave their way through the city.

There are many architectural delights to behold across the city. To see a number of these in one go, it’s a good idea to head to the city’s cultural heart, St Mark’s Square. From here, you’ll be able to explore St Mark’s Basilica, the Bell Tower of St Mark, which you can climb for stunning views across the city and lagoon, and the opulent Doge’s Palace.

There are two iconic bridges which are well worth ticking off the tourist to-do list, too. The beautiful Rialto Bridge offers a great view of the canal and is lined with shops and is a great place to grab a coffee and soak up the atmosphere. The much smaller Bridge of Sighs is a real photo hot-spot and can only be crossed during a visit to the Doge’s Palace.

A Gondola ride is one of the most iconic Venetian experiences and something that you have to try when you visit. You can opt for a daytime sightseeing tour, passing countless bridges and key buildings integral to the history of the city, or for the true romantics, an evening Gondola ride sipping on a refreshing drink while being serenaded is the ultimate in both relaxation and extravagance.

If history’s your thing there are many museums to explore. Art lovers will be intrigued by a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum which houses a great collection of works by the likes of Dali and Picasso.

Venice comprises numerous islands and one of them – Murano - is famed for its glassware. You can tour the factory and see how the glass is made, as well as view some of the historic pieces in the glass museum.
